Gender Equality in Europe

Europe has had great importance for equal rights and emancipation up to now. The politics of the European Union (EU) has strongly influenced advanced regulations in single member countries. But a lot of progress at the EU level is not realized locally and on a regional level in several countries or it is simply ignored. Does one succeed in developing the trendsetting gender-political initiatives, measures and instruments of the EU further? Or does the alliance of conservative forces win more weight in European politics?

The programme "Europe for Citizens" starts from here and pools various activities in the field of gender equality: disussions, conferences, web dossiers, and blogs. These activities provide a plattform for reflexions on tolerance promotion, gender equality, protection of fundamental rights and address both the citizens loss of trust in national governments and European institutions and the associated insecurities.

June 20, 2015 – Prague, Czech Republic

The Women’s Congress is a non-profit network of organizations, institutions and individuals from non-profits, the academia, the art world, public and private sectors. In 2015 the Czech Women’s Congress is focusing on women and media. The debates will belaunched with a panel on the position of women in the media exploring two elementary issues: women’s representation in decision-making positions and whether an increased percentage of women may, in fact, have any effect on media context. Other topics of the congress will be: the depiction of women in the media, both in visual terms as well as in terms of the roles that are traditionally ascribed to women. The international panel „Media across Europe“ for instance will discuss the experience of women journalists from European countries and issues related to the status of women in the media, asking what the status of women in European media really is.

Europe – A Gender Equality Projet?
Continuation of the existing web dossier
year-round – Berlin, Germany

Europe has had great importance for equal rights and emancipation up to now. The politics of the European Union (EU) has strongly influenced advanced regulations in single member countries. But a lot of progress at the EU level is not realized locally and on a regional level in several countries or it is simply ignored. Does one succeed in developing the trendsetting gender-political initiatives, measures and instruments of the EU further? Or does the alliance of conservative forces win more weight in European politics?

In the dossier Europe– A Gender Equality Project? authors analyze the policies of the European Union and its memeber states from a gender and feminist perspective and offers gender political and emancipatory policy concepts.

EU Policy

Faith in the European project is on the wane, as many are unable to recognise the advantages of a consolidated EU – in spite of the fact that they are plain to see, for example regarding a common energy, foreign, and security policy. Through events and studies we aim to foster debates about the future of the EU, and we would like to keep the citizens up-to-date and win them over as active participants able to frame the future of the European Union.
